Anna Salmi

Anna Salmi was born in Hyvinkää, Finland. She studied violin with John Crawford and Gillian Findlay at Trinity College of Music, London, and at the Royal Academy of Music, where she completed her Masters’ Degree in Violin Performance, with Professor Erich Gruenberg, OBE, and viola with Yuko Inoue.

Anna has been involved in hundreds of concerts, recordings and other projects. She enjoys a busy freelance career combining performing with teaching, composing and managing her own company.  She enjoys session work (from classical music to jazz and rock) and has recorded music for films and TV at leading studios. Anna’s soloistic highlights include playing as a kantele soloist for the London Philharmonic at the Royal Festival Hall and partnering the co-leader of the London Symphony Orchestra, Carmine Lauri, in one of Bartok’s Duos for Two Violins at the Barbican as part of the Genius of the Violin Festival in 2006.

In addition to being a founding member of the Lumi String Quartet and Trio Animé, Anna is also a member of The Peter Lucas Band, which has recently released its first recording. Other projects include composing music for the modern dance company, Beyond Repair Dance, and performing live with them in their shows in Covent Garden.

Anna has an LTCL in Violin Teaching and qualified as a Colourstrings teacher in 2002.  As well as teaching violin at the NLCC since 2003, she is Violin/Viola Specialist at The American School, London, where she also directs and coaches the school’s Chamber Music Ensembles. She has travelled widely coaching International Youth Orchestras in such places as Singapore and Beijing and has twice been invited to adjudicate and give performance master-classes at a string competition in The Hague, Netherlands, as part of the International Solo and Ensemble Festival organised by the Association of Music in Intenrational Schools (AMIS).

In her spare time, Anna’s gets her thrills from scuba-diving and travelling.  She loves spicy food and all types of monkeys, and particularly dislikes hoovering…!
